CERN Accelerating science

Art Science in Bogota

Ribeira

Carlos Manuel Rivera Gonzalez is Director of the Project nanoDiseño at the Departamento de Estética Facultad de Arquitectura y Diseño Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, in Bogota.

He came to CERN in September 2019 within the Suratómica group, but had already established a partnership with HEP scientists the Scientists Jairo Rodríguez (LHCb Experiment) and Carlos Sandoval (Atlas Experiment). A longer term partnership is being setup within the nanoDesign project

2020 : Antimatter vibrato, interactive art installation

Result of the research work  & trip to CERN in 2019. The art installation was presented at Casa Hoffmann an important space of art in Bogotá interested in arts, science and technology at the exposition TRANSVERSAL with other art pieces from important Colombian media artists

Antimatter vibrato - Video

Concept: What does antimatter sound like?

Antimatter Vibrato sound is based on Meson B's oscillation between quark-antiquark at 300 million million times per second recorded by the LHCb experiment at CERN. Meson B could be the key to explain the fundamental asymmetry of the universe between matter and antimatter.

When a large amount of energy is printed (speakers) in space / time (water), as at the Big Bang, matter emerges in pairs of matter and antimatter (Ex: electron / positron), identical to each other but with the opposite charge, therefore when they get in contact annihilate each other, returning to the state of energy creating photons.

This CP symmetry between matter and antimatter  was violated at 0.01 nanoseconds after the Big Bang, so a little portion of matter was not annihilated with antimatter and our universe could evolve.

The visitors find a symmetrical landscape when they arrive, the water mirror in a complete calm, is not until they get closer and interact with the art piece when one of the two speakers plays the Boson B sound, exiting the water and breaking the symmetry landscape made of light reflecting in the water.

Red and violet light colour in the piece correspond to the opposites colours in the human visible light spectrum alluding to the CP symmetry behaviour between matter and antimatter:  Violet colour has the lowest wavelength between 380 - 435 nm so is the first colour we see after ultraviolet. Red colour had the highest wavelength, between 625 - 740 nm so is the last colour we see before infrared. The red and violet light colours in the piece change between one and another remembering that from energy you get both matter and antimatter.

Previous project: Unconscious Entanglement, 2018

Concept: We are succession of instants in space, multiple places in time. Quantum properties let us entangle two different particles like electrons or photons so they can behave like a system even if they are separated by kilometres. This is one of the most fascinating behaviours of matter at nano scale and breaks our classic idea of space / time. The green / pink light ring that hangs in the middle of the installation represents the entangle system. In that way visitors can see through the repetitive reflection of the mirror image the entanglement particles apart green / pink to the infinity. If we take the ring of light as a two-dimensional element, it becomes a three-dimensional system at the repetitive virtual images such as a tube or worm hole letting us express some ideas of quantum mechanics like hyperspace theory.

Fall 2019: CERN experiments explored by students of  nanoDesign

This fall the students were divide in 4 groups named each after one of the LHC large experiments, ;and made bibliographic research on standard model particles. They created 4 art installations which were presented on November 20.
