CERN Accelerating science

Sarah's "I am ATLAS" project

I am ATLAS

This title was chosen by Sarah Leach, a Science communication intern who spend a few months at CERN in 2018.

She explained us that she had already introduced ATLAS to the public, but had not seen how the various understanding of the name were connected: ATLAS is an experiment which has a story, but also a detector made of billions of pieces, and a collaboration made of thousands of individuals.

To reflect this permanent transition and binding between the 3, Sarah decided to design a set of simple A4 foils where she was asking the same question to people, objects, concepts. The schema could be adapted to an other experiment or institute, provided the feeling of affiliation, belonging, connection is strong enough.

The complete project setup is attached below.

Sarah then worked for ESO and is now a science editor ( twitter ). She remains the only building 40 student who knitted while thinking !
