The B0 @ P1

The B0 toroid magnet prototype in building 180, when it arrived for the very first tests - in October 2000  . Image  CDS link [ includes link to CERN article ]

Design facts and figures

For informations on the ATLAS magnet system see the dedicated page .  B0 Toroid prototype parameters: [ taken from IEEE paper ]

  • The width (5m) and cross section design are the same as in ATLAS, only the length is 1/3 of the final toroid elements (9m instead of 25.3 m)
  • Total weight 40 tons [ instead of 830 tonnes for the full system ]
  • Same working point temperature and maximum magnetic field as in ATLAS.
  • Was tested in building 180 to gain experience on: magnetic field ramp and properties,  field map monitoring sensors, etc.

Stories & photos:

  • 06.10.2000 Bulletin article: the B0 arrives from Saclay
  • 01.12.2000 Cern courrier article: a giant step for the ATLAS magnet. "The B0 is by far the largest toroid ever built, but only a prototype".
  • 18.07.2001 atlas news announces the test setup celebration !
  • 21.09.2001 CERN-INFN-Saclay meeting on lessons learned: few photos of the talks
  • It remained in building 180 for years... until:
  • 20.09.2017 the EUCAS conference triggers magnets highlights in both CERN web site and courrier. The B0 travels to SM18 !

Where is its final position at P1 ? How much of it shall we see  ?

The B0 is currently on the parking lot, but it will be displayed along the visitors path leading to the AVC. It will sit on legs inspired from the microcosm garden, with an angle of 22.5 degrees - driven by the supports integrated in the cryostat. The 22.5 degrees comes directly from the ATLAS toroid geometry: 22.5 is half of 45 = angle between each of the 8 elements [ see photo ].
